Carpets require frequent cleaning in Singapore, where dust and other airborne impurities from construction sites are common. The question is, how to choose the most suitable company in Singapore? Picking the right choice will not only ensure you a clean environment, but it also gives you a more positive reputation be it home or office.

Therefore, a better alternative would be to hire a professional cleaning service that would be capable of handling such a difficult task effectively. We highly recommend that you get a professional carpeted floor cleaner in Singapore for your home carpet as their service can effectively get rid of all dirt, stains and foul smell.

  4. Not testing cleaning products: Testing cleaning products on a small, inconspicuous area of the carpet is important to ensure that they do not cause discoloration or damage to the carpet.
  5. Using too much cleaning product: Overuse of cleaning products can leave behind residues that attract dirt and cause the carpet to become dirty more quickly. Make sure to use the appropriate amount of cleaning product for the size of the carpet being cleaned.
  6. Not allowing enough drying time: Not allowing the carpet to dry completely after cleaning can lead to mold growth, shrinkage, or water damage.
  7. Not using the right equipment: Using the wrong equipment can cause damage to the carpet or fail to remove stains effectively. Hence, be sure to use appropriate equipment based on the type of carpet and the cleaning method being used.
  8. Not properly pre-treating stains: Failure to pre-treat stains before cleaning can make it more difficult to remove them.

Carpet Cleaning Services Available

Professionals are knowledgeable and have the resources to provide different types of services for your home. Below are a few standard methods used by cleaners in Singapore.

Carpet Shampoo

A unique chemical is used to shampoo your carpet; this can be done manually or with the help of a machine. The rotary machine will ensure that the fabrics in the rug are being cleaned thoroughly clearing all debris. When done correctly, your carpet will smell good, and it will look fresh.

Dry carpet cleaning

This method is useful when soil or dye is found in the carpet, and this is because when the liquid substance is used, the soil or dye will smudge and leave a more significant stain area.

A biodegradable micro-sponge absorbs any tiny debris found, and it can be removed at the end of the process. The time to clean is drastically decreased as no drying is required; hence, it is favoured by most companies due to its efficiency and effectiveness.

Steam cleaning

Usually, an advanced machine is used for this process. A hot chemical solution is being ejected with high pressure onto the carpet; the machine’s vacuum will then suck the chemical out of the rug. Steam cleaning uses a lot of water in the process. However, it is a greener method according to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

Common Questions About Carpet Cleaning Services

Is it worth engaging professional carpets cleaners?

In general, DIY methods can help to clean the surface of it, but they are usually less effective than professionals. While DIY methods can help to get rid of certain stains and build-up, they will not be able to provide sufficient deep clean.

Homeowners often also lack the necessary equipment to properly clean. When DIY methods go wrong, they may often inadvertently end up shortening the lifespan of your carpet and spoil it. As such, besides general upkeeping and vacuuming, it is still recommended to get it professionally cleaned at least once every year.

Now that we have determined that professional services are indeed important, here are seven useful guidelines that you can follow when hiring a professional service in Singapore.

Professional Carpet-cleaning Services

The easiest way to ensure that everything is kept hygienic and immaculate is by hiring a professional carpet cleaning service. An important point to take note of is to be clear with the service providers on what you want to be done. Not only that, it is good to let the contractors know

  • The material it is made of
  • Size/area that you require for cleaning

This would allow the service providers to give you a more detailed quotation of the prices.

Some Methods Used by Professional Cleaning Services

Dry extraction is one of the more common methods. Technically, it is not a “dry” procedure, but more of a “moisture-controlled” process. What it does is that it applies a minimal and measured amount of moisture to it so as to disinfect it while still having it dry.

Though this process is similar to the DIY version of the “dry” method as it uses the same chemicals, the dry process alters the number of chemicals used and how they’re applied.

Professionals have a machine with two counter-revolving brushes that move the cleaning agents through the material. The cleaner supplies enough liquid to dissolve the dirt, then re-absorbs the soil and liquid, which leaves it dry for vacuuming and immediate use.

Hot carbonating extraction is another method professionals use where a carbonated solution is applied to it. This solution takes in dirt and gunk that is on the fibres while ensuring that it remains dryer to reduce the risk of mould growing after. Furthermore, this allows drying quicker within 1 to 2 hours.

Some people feel that in comparison to the “wet” method, the “dry” method does not clean it thoroughly. This is a common misconception as they work equally well.

Though professionals use methods similar to DIY approaches, there are two major differences when it comes down to it.

Firstly, the professionals have the skillsets, know-how, and experience to help determine the maximum cleaning potential of each system and avoid the respective hazards.

Secondly, the professionals usually use much more powerful and sophisticated equipment and agents that we have or lack knowledge to carry the processes out.

Thirdly, having the professionals clean your carpets will save time and energy. You be required to shift the furniture around, and since they are more experienced in tackling heavily soiled areas and stains, in comparison to us, they can handle the problem more efficiently.

What can I do to Clean Carpets Myself?

Some homeowners might decide to DIY to save costs. Here are some tips we provide if you were to have any queries on how to clean or wash them.

Brands like KAERCHER, Hoover, and Bissell provide excellent models of machines and solutions for you to clean effectively.

Thorough it does not have to be done frequently, and if you do not have a lot of carpets at home, we recommend that you take up professional cleaners in Singapore rather than buying an expensive equipment.

However, if you really must, here are steps you can take to DIY carpet clean.

1. Vacuum.

Do it thoroughly on the entire carpet to remove any dust particles and hair.

2. Mix ¼ cup of salt, borax and vinegar respectively.

Apply this solution to areas with deep stains or heavily soiled sections. Leave it aside for a few hours until the carpet is entirely dry and then vacuum it.

3. Use the steam cleaner.

This method is highly recommended as it does not contain chemicals and is proven efficient. If possible, fill the steam cleaner with hot water. Complete this steam cleaning at least twice over the carpet.

4. Leave the carpet to dry completely

In general, it takes about 6-10 hours for a carpet to dry. Avoid stepping on them immediately after its cleaned. Dispose of all the water and chemical solutions responsibly.

Acid stains

For acid stains like drain cleaning solution or vinegar, you should dilute them immediately with baking soda and water or club soda. After that, simply apply a solution of ammonia and water in the ratio 1:10. Rinse the spot with cold water and let it dry before vacuuming it gently.

Alcohol stains

If you happen to spill any alcohol on your carpet, quickly dilute it with cold water. Proceed to absorb the excess liquid with a tablecloth. Then mix a solution of 1 teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar, and a quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the stain and let it dry before vacuuming gently.

Bloodstains

If you are prone to accidents like paper cuts, bloodstains may end up on your carpet. Try to absorb as much of the blood as possible with a cloth immediately. Then, mix a solution of 1 teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the blood stain and let it dry before applying a layer of dry cleaning fluid. Vacuum gently once the carpet is dry.

Butter stains

Butter is slippery by nature and thus, has a high chance of landing on your carpet. Try to scoop as much of the spilt butter as possible before applying a dry cleaning solution and letting it dry. Vacuum the spot gently once it is dry.

Candle wax stains

Melted candle wax is another common stain found on carpets. This stain is easier to treat as the wax will harden once it reaches room temperature. Simply scrape the hardened bits off from the carpet’s surface.

Chewing gum stains

Although chewing gum is banned in Singapore, it still appears in our household every once in a while. Chewing gum can be tougher to remove from your carpet due to its sticky nature. What you can do is harden it first by pressing an ice cube or dabbing cold water over it. Once set, peel it off your carpet gently and slowly.

Chocolate stains

Who doesn’t like to indulge in chocolates in our living rooms every once in a while? However, due to the humid weather in Singapore, chocolate tends to melt much faster. To treat chocolate stains, you should mix a solution of 1 teaspoon each of mild detergent, white vinegar, and a quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the chocolate stain and rinse thoroughly. Vacuum the spot gently once the solution dries up.

Coffee stains

Living in such a fast-paced society makes coffee a necessity in every household. Try to absorb up any spilt coffee with a cloth as soon as possible. Then, mix one teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the coffee stain and let it dry. Once it is dried, apply a layer of dry cleaning solution. Vacuum the area gently once the carpet is dry.

Crayon stains

Having kids would inevitably translate to crayon doodles appearing on every corner of the house, including the carpet. When this occurs, place a blotter over the drawing and press it with warm iron until it absorbs the colour of the crayon.

Try to spread the blotter evenly over the area of the stain. This ensures that the heat from the iron does not accumulate and burn the carpet. Once it is absorbed, apply a layer of dry-cleaning liquid and let it dry before vacuuming gently.

Fruit stains

Fruit stains can be tougher to remove if not dealt with immediately. Therefore, you should absorb any excess juice with a cloth or tissue as soon as possible.

Then, mix a solution of 1 teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water. Dab this solution on the stain and let it dry before vacuuming gently. As fruit stains are more stubborn than other stains, repeat this process if the stain persists.

Gravy stains

Gravy is one of the tastiest add-ons for many food items. Try to clean as much of the spilt gravy as possible with a cloth. Then, mix one teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water.

Apply this solution to the spot before covering it with a layer of dry cleaning solution. Vacuum the spot gently once it is dry.

Mud stains

If you have furry pets living with you like dogs or cats, mud might be a common stain on your carpet. Let the mud dry out entirely before brushing it off with a soft broom.

Then, mix one teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water. Apply this solution to the spot and let it dry before applying a layer of dry cleaning solution. Once the carpet is dry, vacuum it gently.

Soft drink stains

Although spills from soft drinks end up on carpets very often, the carbonation help to speed up the cleaning process. However, try not to let soft drink stains sit around for too long as the carbonation would have dissipated by then. Apply a solution of 1 teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water. Let it dry before vacuuming gently.

Urine stains

Urine stains do not just leave a stain, but they smell too. Therefore, they are any carpet owner’s worst nightmare. When disaster strikes, remain calm and absorb the moisture of the urine immediately.

Then mix one teaspoon of mild detergent, white vinegar and a quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the stain. Apply a solution of carpet cleaning freshener to the stain to get rid of odour. Once the spot is dry, vacuum it gently.

Vomit stains

Stains from vomit should be treated quickly. Try to absorb as much of the vomit as possible with a cloth and then dilute it immediately with a mixture of baking soda and water. Then, apply a solution of ammonia and water in a ratio of 1:10. This is because vomit contains stomach acid that can be treated with ammonia. Rinse the spot with cold water and let it dry before vacuuming it gently.

Red wine stains

Red wine stains are most probably the most common stains found on carpets. The trick is to dilute the red wine stain with a solution of white wine before rinsing it with cold water. Next, cover the area with some table salt and wait for 10 minutes. Once everything is dry, vacuum up the salt gently.

Suppose the stains do not come off from vacuuming. In that case, it is time to incorporate deep cleaning into your carpet cleaning routine. Deep cleaning is encouraged when your carpet:

  • Is in a very different shade from when you first bought it.
  • Feels gluey and sticks to the floor easily.
  • Exhales an air of dust when you step on it.

Here are six easy steps on how you can deep clean your carpet at home.

How To DIY Carpet Deep Cleaning:

  1. Test for colourfastness. Wet a white towel with a carpet cleaning solution and rub it on a small area. This is to test whether the colour from the carpet will bleed onto the towel from the solution. If it does not, then the solution that you are currently using will be safe to be applied to the entire carpet.
  2. Remove any furniture that is on the carpet and those that might obstruct the cleaning process. Wrap the legs and bases of your furniture with plastic film or foil to prevent any subsequent stains on your carpet.
  3. Vacuum your carpet thoroughly though gently. Then, try to treat any remaining stains found with the appropriate methods that we shared previously. Apply shampoo on the entire carpet.
  4. Apply only single strokes on the surface of the carpet using a carpet cleaning machine of your choice. Avoid applying too much pressure on your carpet with the machine.
  5. Apply the carpet cleaning solution on the legs of your furniture to ensure that they do not dirty the carpet once the deep cleaning process is over.
  6. Make sure your living room is well-ventilated after the carpet cleaning process to speed up drying. You can leave your carpet out on the balcony to dry as the heat from the sun will shorten the drying process. However, you must remember to bring it in if it starts to rain.
